Two Sides of the Same Coin… – an exhibition at the Nicolaus Copernicus University Museum
On May 29th at 5:00 PM, the opening of the exhibition Two Sides of the Same Coin: Numismatic Antiquarianism of the 16th - 18th Centuries as reflected in Old Prints and Ancient Coins will begin at the University Museum in Toruń (1 Rapacki Square). The exhibition is curated by Dr. Bartosz Awianowicz, a professor at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, a researcher at the Department of Classical Philology at the Faculty of Humanities, and organized by the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library. The exhibition is held under the honorary patronage of the Rector of Nicolaus Copernicus University, Prof. Andrzej Tretyn, the Polish Numismatic Society and the Numimarket.pl Auction House.
The exhibition will feature nearly 30 old prints from the collections of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library and private collections, important for coin research and collection. These include important scholarly works, the first catalogs of coins and medals, as well as early compendiums for collectors and 18th-century auction catalogs.
The books will be accompanied by 74 coins from ancient Greece and Rome, medals from the early modern era, and a decorative numismatic tray dating from the 18th century. All the objects complement each other like the obverse and reverse of a single medal. Together, they offer insight into the "republic of medals" inhabited by researchers and collectors from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
The exhibition will be on display until July 28th.
