Textus et pictura VI. Medieval manuscript codex in sacred usage

The 6th edition of the interdisciplinary academic conference Textus et Pictura will be held at the University Library in Toruń from January 22 to 24, 2026 (auditorium no. 8).

Since 2017, this conference has been co-organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and the University Library in Toruń, and since 2022, in cooperation with the Early Book Workshop of the Institute of the History of Science, Polish Academy of Sciences.

The subject of subsequent editions is medieval manuscript codex, studied from multiple perspectives: historians and art historians, bibliologists, codicologists, philologists and paleographers, and conservators. The main theme of this year's meeting is the manuscript codex, which functioned in various spheres of religious life in the Middle Ages – from communal liturgy to private devotion – as a medium for transmitting biblical, dogmatic, and homiletical content, as well as texts, formulas, and norms regulating communal worship and those fulfilling private practice, both in clergy and laity. The focus will therefore be on liturgical books and private prayer books, volumes of the Bible and biblical commentaries, homilies, and records of mystical experiences.

Friday morning will be filled with presentations of research projects on medieval books, while Thursday and Friday evenings will feature public lectures. This year, we will have the opportunity to hear lectures from researchers from the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. Dr. Kateřina Kubínová will present The Vyšehrad Codex: A Coronation Evangeliary? (January 22, 6:30 p.m.), and Dr. Jan Dienstbier will present Zig-zag Style in Bohemia: Art and Liturgy (January 23, 6:00 p.m.).

Posters presenting medieval manuscripts from the University Library in Toruń and seals from the Archives of the Archdiocese of Warmia in Olsztyn will be displayed in front of the library auditorium.
