Second Lectures on Medicine – a meet-the-author session with Prof. Wojciech Szczęsny

The University Library and the NCU Academic Publishing House cordially invite you to the launch of the book Second Lectures on Medicine and a meet-the-author session with Prof. Wojciech Szczęsny – a research fellow at the Department of General, Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery at the NCU Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz. The discussion will be moderated by Marcin Lutomierski, PhD - Deputy Director of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Academic Publishing House.

The meeting will begin on June 24th, at 5.00 pm in the NCU Main Library (room 8)

In his book, Professor Szczęsny describes over a dozen medical specialisms: their history, their focus, and explains the principles behind many diagnostic tests. He discusses the clinical symptoms of dozens of conditions and debunks myths. What is pain and how does it arise? What is the history of the fight against it? Why were the first intensive care units established? What is the connection between a venflon and a dialysis machine? How did our ancestors envisage human development? Can the heart really be tucked away ‘in a rucksack’? Were teeth ‘transplanted’? Finally – can a doctor learn anything from the dead? The reader will find answers to these and hundreds of other similar questions in this book.
