Money as a work of art

We invite you to the opening of the exhibition entitled Outstanding medalists and graphic artists in the designs of commemorative coins and banknotes of the National Bank of Poland donated to the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library, which will take place on June 8th at 1 p.m. (1st floor of the Nicolaus Copernicus Main Library).

The exhibition curators are Bartosz Awianowicz, professor at the Nicolaus Copernicus University Department of Classical Philology, and Elżbieta Hudzik from the Graphic Collections Department of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library.

The exhibition will be on view to July 10th, 2026.

In February 2026, the University Library received a gift from the National Bank of Poland (NBP) of 50 commemorative coins and 4 collector banknotes issued between 2021 and 2024.

Among the coin designers was Sebastian Mikołajczak, a sculpture graduate and currently a research and teaching assistant at the Department of Interior Design and Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Nicolaus Copernicus University. Other designers of the exhibited objects include Dominika Karpińska-Kopiec, Robert Kotowicz, Krystian Michalczuk, Grzegorz Pfeifer, Paweł Pietras, and Urszula Walerzak.

The exhibition will offer an opportunity to examine money not only as a means of payment, but also as works of art designed by medallists and graphic artists.
