Restrictions on artificial intelligence to process licensed electronic resources

Dear Readers,

Due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, after analysing the content of agreements for providing access to the full text of articles in electronic journals and to the full text of chapters in electronic books, the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library in Toruń kindly informs you that in 2025 there will be a total ban on the use of AI to search licensed content and generate results based on it.

Some agreements for access to electronic resources contain explicit provisions prohibiting the use of artificial intelligence tools, while others contain clauses prohibiting machine processing, which should be considered as a lack of consent to the use of AI to generate results based on licensed full texts of publications.

Detailed information on the terms and conditions of individual licences can be found in the NCU Library catalogue under the ‘Show licence’ tab in the ‘Full text’ section. We will keep you informed of any changes.

A list of purchased electronic collections for which the use of AI is prohibited can be found in the Online Reading Room on the University Library website.

Any additional queries regarding the terms and conditions of the licence should be addressed to: Zasoby_elektroniczne@bu.umk.pl
