On June 23, Prof. Jerzy Perzanowski presented the NCU Library with a
precious gift, Aristotle's Organon. Aristotle's writings on logic
compiled by Boethius Anicius Manlius Severinus, pressed in the Venetian
printing office of Francesco Portonari in 1567, also include graphs and
woodcut initials.
Presentation of the book to the Library by Prof. Jerzy Perzanowski:
Dr Miroslaw Supruniuk
Director of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library
in Torun
On the sands of Torun, the great exiles from Vilnius and Lviv planted
the trees of knowledge and affection for wisdom. The fruits of their
planting nourish new generations of Polish women and men.
One of the great exiles was Professor Tadeusz Czezowski, whose
contribution to Poland and the Vilnius country, to Vilnius and
Torun, and finally the Nicolaus Copernicus University are beyond
all praise. Most significantly, he rescued the main part of the
Philosophical Seminar Library of the Stefan Batory University in
Vilnius, which he supplemented with books saved from philosophy
collections scattered in and around Torun.
Let us recall that, in his speech acknowledging the University for
granting him an honourary doctorate degree, Professor Czezowski
donated the NCU Library his private book collection. The most valuable
item in his collection, the 1567 Venetian printing of Aristotle's
Organon, containing writings on logic, was deposited in the safe of the
Department of Logic for 50 years. After Professor's passing, for the
past 24 years, Organon was under the care of Professors Leon Gumanski
and Jerzy Perzanowski, the former heads of the Department of Logic.
Leaving the University, I wish to hand this precious work over to the
NCU Library. I trust that it remains an institution of the fading
Vilnius-Torun university. Hence, it is the right place for storing
the last gift of Professor Czezowski's to this University, to Our
University.
May this work continue to serve the entire Universitas Torunensis. May
it remind us of Professor Tadeusz Czezowski, his service to the
University and the country. May it be a reminder of what he represented.
Thanking for the gift, Dr. Miroslaw A. Supruniuk, the University Library
Director, said:
Dear Professor Jerzy Perzanowski,
Please accept these words of gratitude for presenting the University
Library with this wonderful and valuable item from the collection of
Professor Tadeusz Czezowski Aristole's Organon, compiled by
Boethius Anicius Manlius Severinus, published in 1567, in Venice, at the
printing office of Francesco Portonari. It is a wonderful gift.
The book, earlier absent from our collection, an unusually rare item in
Poland in general, will enhance the collection of the rarest books, the
old prints. It will serve research in Torun and Poland.
