On 23rd June 2006 the award presentation ceremony for the 6th edition of the competition for Kujawsko-Pomorskie Marshal's Award took place at Nicolaus Copernicus University assembly hall (Aula). In category 'science and technical progress' the team prize went to Kujawsko-Pomorska Digital Library creators: Bożena Bednarek-Michalska (Nicolaus Copernicus University Library, the coordinator of the project), Maria Czarnecka-D±bek (Kazimierz Wielki University Library) and dr Krzysztof Nierzwicki (Collegium Medicum Library). Created in December 2005 Kujawsko-Pomorska Digital Library has over 9 600 items in a digital form, among others: books, periodicals, social life documents, maps, graphics and postcards concerning Kujavia and Pomerania regions. In three main collections, the reader can find digital forms of present-day documents, as well as originated in 19th century. Publishing older items is not a problem for extinguished copyrights. Currently, the main goal for KPBC authors is to gain contemporary items to enter Educational Materials collection, created especially for the students of the region. In order to become a research unit supporting educational processes, KPBC should have texts presenting scientific achievements of the employees working for the Institutions creating it. The effects of negotiations with the authors and publishers are seen in KPBC (e.g. manuals for archvists). The creators of KPBC are going to expand the cooperation, among others within the European Projects and also encourage other Cultural Institutions in Kujavia and Pomerania to create a store of digital items. Bożena Bednarek-Michalska, who is also a member of a team for digitalization matters by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, has put forward a suggestion of creating an all-Poland digital libraries consortium (a founding meeting took place at Nicolaus Copernicus University Library this March) to coordinate the initiatives of collections digitalization.
