The Exhibition of Stefan Batory University in Wilno (1919-1939/45)
|
The sixtieth anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus University is
the reason for organizing series of lectures by the NCU Professors' Club under the auspices of
Rector Magnificus Professor Jan Kopcewicz.
The first lectures from the 20th of October were devoted to the tradition of the Torun Almae
Matris concerning the roots of the University in Torun. According to the promise of cooperation
made to the NCU Professors' Club, the University Library prepared an exhibition presenting the
history and the scientific achievements of the Stefan Batory University in Wilno - one of the two
Polish higher education institutions (right next to the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwow), whose
staff and administration workers jointly created the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun in 1945.
Arranged in a chronological and factual order: documents, manuscripts, photographs, printings,
keepsakes and scanty books show the beginning, subsequently the development and the end of the SBU
in the years from 1919 till 1939. Those documents certify the fates of the scientific staff during
the Second World War and after. The exhibition shows separately: the faculties, the Senate and the
Staff, the students' life (students' unions and societies), the SBU Library and administration.
Equivalently to this exposition is a large and representative collection of the graphic art and
drawings of the Fine Arts Faculty of the SBU (which belong to the University Library)
The organizer of the whole exhibition
is dr Anna Supruniuk and Mr Jan Kotłowski, who was responsible for
the graphic part. All the presented archive materials come firstly
from the University Library collections (mainly from the Social Life
Documentation Department; which has the biggest collection of the
keepsakes of the SBU in Wilno). The exhibition was also supplemented
by scantly documents remained after the professors, by items borrowed
from the NCU Archives and the Ethnographical Museum (the Maria
Znamierowska-Prufferowa Heritage) and from the private collections of
the professors, workers of the NCU Library and students.
The exhibition will be continuously
presented and completed till the end of this year according to the
future lectures.
