Dear Sir/Madam:

The Archives of Polish Emigration, Poland’s main center for studies on the history of Polish emigration, is currently building the only non-museum Gallery of Emigration Art in Poland. The Gallery collection will serve art history research but also, it will be used in exhibitions and media activities. It consists of publications about different aspects of artistic activity of Polish émigrés in the 20th century, such as: criticism, exhibition catalogs, reproductions, artist archives (correspondence, memoirs, book collections, sketchbooks), gallery archives and art journals. In addition to that, the Gallery collects original works, such as, paintings, carvings, graphics and other. As most Polish university institutions, we cannot afford to buy the existing artwork while it is estimated that several thousands of Polish artists were active abroad in the 20th century. Hence, the Gallery collection exists almost entirely as a result of generous donations.

For many years, we have appealed to Poles living abroad to help us in developing our collection. Our goal is to gather if only one small piece of work of the largest possible number of Polish émigré artists. So far, our appeal has generated a positive reaction. Within five years, we have been able to collect several thousands of objects of great historic and museum value. We receive entire archives, souvenirs, as well as, single works from friends of artists or authors themselves. They are often works of artists completely forgotten or unfairly neglected in Poland. We hope that our efforts will recall their talents to future generations of art historians.

I would be honored if you, Sir/Madam, would consider entrusting your husband’s/wife’s/friend’s archives, documents or artwork to us.
